Enabling The Windows XP Firewall

A firewall is a security measure that creates a protective boundary (or wall) between a computer and the Internet in order to protect the computer from unauthorized access. Windows XP includes Internet Connection Firewall software that can be used to restrict the connections made from the Internet to your computer. Here are the steps for enabling this firewall:

  1. Click Start, then Control Panel

  2. Locate Network Connections and double-click the icon to open it.

  3. The Network Connections window will open, will list all of the network connections available.
  4. Select the network connection that you want to enable the firewall for, i.e. the network connection you use the most.
  5. Right-click on the icon and select Properties in the menu that will pop up.

  6. In the Local Area Connection Properties window select the Advanced tab, then click the Settings button.

  7. The Windows Firewall window appears showing the General tab

  8. Click the ON (recommended) button
