DEANS: E-mail Issues

Deans accounts are subsets of the Glue system. Most e-mail problems can be solved by looking in the Unix Mail section or try the WAM / Glue Documentation. There are problems specific to Deans accounts and they are covered below:

  • deans.umd.edu used to allows mail relaying. If you are receiving the error message "relay was denied":
    1. Change your SMTP server in your mail program to smtp.deans.umd.edu.
    2. After this is done please look at FAQ Resolving E-mail Rejection Problems.
  • If you used elm to access their mail and can not see your old save message folders in pine, do the following from a Unix command prompt within your account:
    1. cd ~/Mail
    2. ls
    3. You should see a list of files and they will need to be moved to another location. You can do this with the following command:
    4. mv -i * ~/mail
    5. If a file with the same name already exists in ~/mail, you will be prompted about overwriting the existing file. Answer n for no and note the filename.
    6. If you have any filenames from above that were not moved, you can move them with the following command:
    7. mv -i old_filename  ~/mail/new_filename
    8. The new_filename can not match any of the filenames in ~/mail .
    9. Now pine should be able to see new message folder that should contain the old saved messaged.
  • If you are having problems getting access to your elm address book in pine, please call the Office of Information Technology (OIT) Help Desk
  • The Deans system used to use deans.umd.edu as it pop, imap and smtp server. However this has changed, please update your mail program with the following settings:
    • SMTP Server = smtp.deans.umd.edu
    • IMAP Server = imap.deans.umd.edu
    • IMSP Server = imsp.deans.umd.edu
    • POP Server = pop.glue.umd.edu
