Creating a Distribution List in Pine

A pine distribution list allows you to condense a list of email addresses into a single entry in the pine address book. To create a distribution list do the following:

  1. Open pine.
  2. Type M to go to the main menu if you are not already there.
  3. Type A to go to the address book.
  4. Type @ to create a new address book entry.
  5. Enter a Nickname in the space provided. Enter any of the other information that you wish such as Fullname, Fcc, and a Comment.
  6. In order to make the entry a distribution list just enter multiple email addresses or address book nicknames in the Addresses field separated by commas. Below is an example.
    Nickname : Test List
    Fullname :
    Fcc :
Comment : This is a test list
    Addresses : tester1, joeuser@glue.umd.edu

  7. Once you are done entering addresses type Ctrl-X to save the changes and exit back to the address book.

Distribution lists act similar to regular address book nicknames and you use them as such. Just enter the nickname for the distribution list in the appropriate field of the message and send it out.
