loads, you should see a welcome screen similar to the one below.
- If the

instructions.
- With Outlook Express open, click on Tools and choose
Accounts.

selected by default.
- Click on Add and select Mail.

- The e-mail address you enter should look similar to
this: Johndoe@glue.umd.edu.
- Also, the @glue portion may be
different depending on the account that you are configuring for
Outlook Express.
- In this step, you must first choose the type of mail server.
- We
recommend setting the incoming mail server to
IMAP because you will always have a copy of your messages on the
mail server.
- If you decide to choose POP3, beware that your
messages will be downloaded from the mail server to your local hard drive.
This means if you delete the message, you will have
no back-up copy.
- Type in the appropriate IMAP or POP server for your
e-mail account in the Incoming mail box:
IMAP
If your e-mail account is a:
- Mail@UMD account, use mail.umd.edu
- Glue account, use imap.glue.umd.edu
- Deans account, use imap.deans.umd.edu
POP
If your e-mail account is a:
- Mail@UMD account, use mail.umd.edu

Next, type the appropriate Outgoing
mail server name
for your e-mail account using the list below:
PLEASE NOTE: If you use an Internet service provider

must use your ISP's SMTP server (contact your Internet Service Provider
for more information on this) instead of one of the servers listed below.

- Glue account, use smtp.glue.umd.edu
- Deans account, use smtp.deans.umd.edu
If you use an Internet Service Provider (ISP) other than the University of Maryland for Internet access,
you must use your ISP's SMTP server (contact your provider for more information on this)
instead of one of the servers listed previously.
Once you have filled in the server names, click Next to continue.
- In the Account name: field type in your Directory ID and associated Password into the Password: field
and click Next.
Note: Check the Remember password box if you would like the
computer to automatically store your password and log you into your account automatically.
- Click the Finish button to end the wizard.

Express and do the following:

menu and select Accounts

- Click to select the Mail tab
- Highlight your mail account name (in this case
"mail.umd.edu")
- Click to select the Properties button

- In the Properties window, click on the
Servers tab
- In the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) field, type in
your server information (e.g., mail.umd.edu).
- Check
the box My Server Requires Authentication.
NOTE: Leave this un-checked for Glue or Deans.

- Click on the Advanced tab
- If your Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server is mail.umd.edu,
make sure that This server
requires a secure connection (SSL) is checked.
(NOTE: Leave this
un-checked for Glue or Deans.)
- Incoming mail
(IMAP): make sure that This server
requires a secure connection (SSL) is checked.
- Do not change the default port numbers
- Click
Apply and then OK at the bottom of the Properties window

- Click Close to close the Account window.
Read Your E-mail
-
You are returned to the Internet Accounts window. Select
the new mail account by clicking on it
once.
- Click the Set as Default button.
- Click Close.
- Click Yes to continue.
- Outlook Express will begin to download your mail folders.
- Once your mail folders have been downloaded, click OK to continue.
- Outlook Express has been successfully set up to receive mail from
your account. In the left pane, you should see the name of the mail server
that you have created. If there is a plus (+) sign next to
server name, click the plus sign to expand its contents. Once the list
is expanded, you should see the Inbox folder. Click on the Inbox
and Outlook Express will connect to the mail server and retrieve your
messages. If nothing happens, click on the Send/Recv icon just to
ensure Outlook Express is working correctly.
- By default, the message preview pane is enabled in Outlook
Express. In Outlook Express 5.0 and 5.5, the preview pane is a
security risk because you can accidentally activate a virus by
viewing an infected e-mail message in the preview pane (Outlook
Express 6 does not have this security flaw). If you are
using Outlook Express 5.0 or 5.5, please disable
the preview pane by clicking View, and choosing Layout....
- Locate the Preview Pane category and un-check
Show preview pane. Click Apply and click OK.
- The preview pane should be disabled. If you would like to read a
message, double click on the message and it will open in a new window.
This ends the Outlook Express set-up procedure and you can now send and
receive e-mail through Outlook Express.
