How To Configure Pine To Read And Post Usenet News

Pine is not recommended for reading Usenet news. For reading and posting news, you should use one of the system newsreaders, like 'rn', 'trn' or 'tin' (the 'tin' newsreader is discussed in the document Getting Started With Your WAM Unix Account), or use an offline newsreader such as Thunderbird, Outlook or Outlook Express.

Click here for general information on the supported newsreaders.

If you wish to read and/or post news from Pine, you'll first need to configure Pine to be able to see the newsgroups. To check this, login into Pine and choose "Folder List" from the main menu. If you get two areas, a "Folder-collection" and a "News-collection", you have the ability to see the news. If you don't see both areas, go back to the main menu (M), then type 'S' (Setup), then 'C' (Configure). You'll be placed in a list of options you can change in Pine, the seventh item being "news-collections". This will probably have the value "<No Value>". To change this: type 'A' (Add), then type:

    *{news2.wam.umd.edu/nntp}[]

Type 'E' (Exit) to quit configuration screen: Answer "Yes" to the question about saving the changes.

Note: Enter the string exactly as shown above; simply entering the correct news server in the field will NOT enable Pine to post news to that server. (If you don't do it right Pine will probably give a warning.)

Once you've made sure Pine is configured correctly, you can refer to the document How to read and post Usenet news from Pine to use Pine for news.
